about

Carlos "Bechegas" - flute
João Madeira - double bass
Ulrich Mitzlaff - cello

Reviews:
""Open in Finder", by Carlos Bechegas (flute) with Mitzlaff and Madeira, starts off minimalist in terms of components, with notes of sound that later conglomerate, gaining shape and volume in a crescendo that is interesting to follow. It could be post-serialism or new complexity, but a post-jazz style dominates, made up of brushstrokes, blocks of sound, silences, breaths, tiny details. The music is discursive and narrative, like a film soundtrack in which the characters' own dialogues are included. In a way, this disc feels like a synthesis of the previous two: it has poetry, but also viscerality; it's both expressionist and impressionist. Mitzlaff and Madeira don't just accompany the flautist or come out individually to the front: they also function semiotically, as if each instrument were the different twin or the extension of the other at the junctions of scales, together opposing the flautist.
The late Leroy Jenkins said in an interview some thirty years ago: "Classical people say I'm not classical and jazz people say I don't play jazz. What am I supposed to do?". These new releases still grapple with these questions, but they go a step further in resolving them."

---------------------------------
"Portuguese flutist Carlos Bechegas made a name for himself some twenty years ago with a series of compact discs featuring Peter Kowald, Derek Bailey, Barry Guy, Alex von Schlippenbach, Joëlle Léandre, Michel Edelin and the tandem of André Goudbeek and Peter Jacquemyn. Here he is in good company from Lisbon, the fruitful fraternity of Portuguese rope walkers. We'll never finish listing them and listening to them with each other. It's hard to believe. Carlos Zingaro, Ernesto Rodrigues, Ulrich Mitzlaff, Miguel Mira, Maria Do Mar, Maria Da Rocha, Helena Espvall, Hernani Faustino, Alvaro Rosso, João Madeira, etc... all published by Creative Sources (over 750 albums - the Portuguese avant-garde label). Now another more than promising label from Lisbon has jumped on the bandwagon, led by double bassist João Madeira, here with cellist Ulrich Mitzlaff and Carlos Bechegas, adding another fine opus to its invaluable catalogue. Open Finder brings to mind the titles of Bechegas' albums entitled 'Open' something.
And this is one of the main qualities of this refined, subtle improvised experimental chamber music, in which intense mutual listening and magnificent research - a range of sounds - predominate: openness to the instrumental occurrences of each individual, their instantaneous proposals and their secret inspirations. Because before such a meeting, nothing is said, but is discovered in a journey divided into four movements - developments with suggestive titles: Stream for One, Drag after Two, Rename under Three and Cut Out over Four. Above all, this is collective music, in which everything interweaves and blends together with finesse, illuminated by the flautist's contemporary lyricism. Each piece is a distinct musical entity, with its introverted sequences, its dreams, its shimmers, its mood swings, and a musical culmination from start to finish. If you want to give a nice present to anyone who is sensitive to this 'genre' of detailed 'improvised' music etc., you won't go wrong by offering this beautiful Open Finder to open up your ears even more. Magnificent."
