"The recording in question dates back to June 2022, live, then was mixed for release by João Madeira. The musicians in question are five, caught in a rather positive moment in front of the home crowd. Next to Ernesto Rodrigues
on viola there are Bruno Parrinha on bass clarinet, João Madeira on double bass, Hernani Faustino also on double bass and José Oliveira on percussion. They are all expert musicians who celebrate improvisation in 3 improvised songs, with impassioned and impressive tangles of sound. Sometimes, when Ernesto Rodrigues is conducting the excited moments, they seem like Leroy Jenkins' trio Revolutionary Ensemble, but with a greater impact, as here we are talking about five active and empathic mussians about how the band's music should sound. At the center of attention are the two double bass players, often played with the bow, but never self-referential. It is improvised in a group, almost a ritual, transmitting almost delusional moments. Eventually we realize the charm of this music, which envelops and excites the listener." Vittorio, Musiczoom
""Unpoem" is a recording from Smup, Parede by
the quintet, notable for two double bass players. The
quinted plays one suite "Unpoem" in three movements.
The music is dominated by the strings and consists in
combination of free improvisation, free minimal music
and contemporary classical music, so characteristic for
the Rodrigues Family Business and the Lisbon Sco¡ene, in general. The best fragments of the suite, for me, are those when one can hear better exposed lines of bass clarinet of Bruno Parrinha, for
instance in the nal part of the 12 minutes long "I". The
highlight seems to be 21 minutes long "II", but I actually
dig the short, only 4 and a half minute long "III" for its
expressive and rhythmic power. Another great one from
